Biography
Sam Potozkin is a Northern Californian Native who studies music production and composition at Diablo Valley College. Sam began to explore the world of music production in high school when he discovered pioneers in the music industry including Mike Dean, Frank Dukes, Illangelo, Vinylz, Allen Ritter, and Metro Boomin. Sam soon realized that his interest in the field was much more than a passing curiosity - it was a passion that thrilled him.
Berklee College of Music 2022 music production summer workshop in Boston, MA and the “Prodsecrets” course offered by S1 (who has worked with artists like Kanye West, Jay Z, Beyonce, and Drake), were among some of the most instrumental in growing and expanding his skills as a composer and producer thus far. During the pandemic, filled with all the inherent challenges of being a teenager, Sam found music that spoke to him on a much deeper level that both saved and inspired him. Kanye West, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Drake, A$AP Rocky, and other primary figures of the hip hop/R&B scene were the initial sparks that lit the flame of Sam's musical creativity. John Williams’ sweeping soundtrack of “Star Wars” and the scores for the Legend of Zelda video games by Koji Kondo provided earlier inspirations.
Sam was exposed to a wide range of music at an early age through his father's love of R&B, funk, and rock and his mother’s passion for acoustic folk ballads. As a child, Sam was drawn to the creative arts when he was cast in the lead roles in musical productions. He continued his theatrical musical education with the Berkeley Repertory School of Theatre. At one point he joined a rock band as lead singer exposing him to an even more diverse range of music that included punk and grunge rock like Green Day, Nirvana and the Ramones. During those early years, his music education also included five years of piano lessons with several skilled instructors who exposed Sam to classical music, unearthing his innate musical talent. Sam would often figure out how to play songs that he liked by feeling out the keys by ear before he had even learned how to read music.
Sam enjoys spending time with his two dogs, his family, and watching old movies.
